Building good idea groups

An idea group is your main lever over what Aivie writes. The fields of the dialog are described in Ideas and idea groups. This page is about the choices behind them.

One topic per group

We recommend giving each group one coherent topic, with keywords that belong together. Three things in the way Aivie works point that way:

  • The keywords are direction, not a list of words that must all appear. For each idea Aivie takes the next keyword of the list as the main keyword and gives the others as context.
  • The name of the group is only a label for you. It does not appear in the text, unless it is also a keyword.
  • A group has one content type and one parent page. Blog posts and service pages are different groups.

Before it writes, Aivie collects the titles of the pages under the same parent and of all pages of the same content type. The agent is told to take a different angle than they do, and a title that repeats an existing one word for word is rejected. A group can therefore keep running for months without writing the same page twice. Groups of a different content type are not compared, so give them different keywords.

How big a group should be

Each run divides what is left of your monthly ideas allowance over the groups that are active that month. Your package decides how many pages you get, not the group. The card of a group shows Ideas this month: with its share. See How much a run makes.

We recommend starting with a few groups of a few related keywords each, and no more groups than you can give a few ideas a month. Many groups next to a small allowance leave some with one idea or none. If a group shows 0, see Fewer ideas than expected.

Start and end month

A group takes part in the months from its start month to its end month. The end month is optional: leave it empty for a topic that stays relevant, and fill it in for a seasonal one. See When a group can start.

Make or change your groups before the monthly run. A group you create after that run waits for the next one, unless you press Auto generate.

Content type and parent page

The content type decides which Layer 2 document applies, and with it the target length of the page, so link your Layer 2 documents to your page types first. See Link Layer 2 to your page types.

As the parent, choose the page under which this kind of page belongs, for example your blog overview. A group without a parent page is left out of the run, unless you have set a default parent page. See Page building.

Goal, service and audience

You can pick one goal, one service and one audience per group. We recommend doing so when the group is meant for one of each, and leaving them empty otherwise: without an audience, Aivie takes the one from your settings that is closest to the service and the keywords. See Writing good company and brand input.

Choose example pages

An example page shows Aivie how a page of this type is built on your site, not what it says or how long it is. We recommend choosing two or three pages that are:

  • published, of the content type of the group and on the same site as the parent page, with at least one block;
  • built the way you want new pages to look, not one-off layouts;
  • different from each other in build, so the ideas do not all look alike.

For each idea Aivie takes the example that fits the topic best and spreads the ideas over your examples. With a single example every page follows the same pattern. If you choose none, Aivie picks published pages of the same type with the most varied build, leaving out pages that Aivie wrote. See Example pages.

Use the custom instruction sparingly

The Custom instruction goes with every idea of the group and weighs heavily: it comes before Aivie's own preference, unless it clashes with the requirements for a page. We recommend one or two sentences about the angle of this group, for example "Write for people who are comparing suppliers". Rules for every page belong in Layer 3, and the length of a page in its Layer 2 document.

Try before you run

Press the magnifier on the card of the group. Aivie works out one idea, creates nothing and deducts nothing from your allowance, but it is a real AI call on your OpenAI bill. Press Again a few times to see how much the ideas vary. If they look alike, widen the keywords or add example pages. See Preview a group.
