Images and media
Aivie can generate images for you: in the chat, with the Generate with AI button in the media picker, and when the idea generator fills in a missing image. This page lists what image generation needs and how to tune it. How to use it day to day is in Generate images.
What image generation needs
Image generation works when three things are in place:
- The experimental image generation feature of Umbraco.AI is switched on. The setup wizard turns it on for you, but it only takes effect after the site restarts.
- There is an image profile, which is the Umbraco.AI profile that actually draws the image. The wizard creates one and makes it the default image profile when none is set yet.
- Generate AI images is on under Brand & style in the general settings. See Company and brand.
Because of the restart, run the wizard twice: apply, restart the site, and apply again. The image profile may only be created in a second run. See Setup wizard. If an image does not appear, see Images not generating.
Where the settings are
The settings below are on the Settings tab of Setup, which only members of Aivie-admin can open, in the group Images and media.
- Open the Aivie section, Aivie - Content.
- In the sidebar, under Configuration, choose Setup, and then the tab Settings.
- Find the group Images and media, change the values you need and press Save.
Keys and defaults are in the configuration keys.
Media folder
Aivie keeps its images in one folder of the media library. Generated images are saved there, and the idea generator picks from the images in it. The setup wizard creates the folder when it does not exist yet. The setting Media folder lets you pick another folder with a folder picker.
If the folder does not exist, image generation fails with a message saying so, because Aivie would otherwise place the image in the root of your media library. Only this folder is used for deriving an image style and for replacing images, as described below.
Image descriptions
Aivie finds images by their description. The idea generator reads it to choose a fitting image, and the chat writes one for every image it creates. To give that text a place, Aivie adds a field to the Image media type on the first start, with the alias aiDescription. The backoffice shows it with the Dutch name AI Omschrijving, in the first group of the media type.
Aivie leaves the media type alone when it already has a description field with one of the aliases aiDescription, aiOmschrijving, description or omschrijving, and when there is no Image media type at all. Aivie does this once. If you remove the field afterwards, for example because you sync media types from files, it stays removed on later starts. Running the setup wizard adds it again.
Image profile
The setting Profile for image generation holds the alias of the Umbraco.AI profile that generates the images. You find your profiles under AI → Profiles. When it is empty, Aivie uses the default image profile of Umbraco.AI. That is the normal case after the wizard has set one up. Fill it in when you want Aivie to use another profile than the default.
The profile must be an image generation profile. A chat profile cannot draw. That is also why the wizard creates a second profile next to the chat profile.
Size
Two groups of settings decide the size of an image.
Image size requested from the model is the size Aivie asks the model for. With auto Aivie asks the model which sizes it supports and takes the widest landscape size. You can also enter a fixed size as width and height, for example 1792x1024. If that size is not in what the model reports, Aivie writes a warning to the log and still tries it, because the list can be out of date for a newer model. If your model has no landscape size, or Aivie cannot find out which sizes the model supports, it asks you to enter a size.
Stored width and Stored height are the size at which the file is saved. At 0 the image is stored exactly as the model delivers it, which keeps the best quality. If you enter a width and a height, Aivie crops the image to that ratio from the centre and then scales it. Scaling up from a smaller original costs quality, and the log warns about it when the difference is large.
Style samples
When you press Derive from existing images under Brand & style, Aivie shows some images from the media folder to the AI model and asks for a description of their common style. The setting Images used to derive the image style limits how many images go to the model. Aivie shrinks them first to keep the cost low. See Company and brand.
Replacing a new image
When someone asks the chat for a different image right after one was generated, the chat can throw away the one it just made. This only works for images in the Aivie media folder that were created within a time window, and the image goes to the recycle bin, not away for good. The setting Replacement window in minutes sets the length of that window.
Turning image generation off
Turn off Generate AI images under Brand & style to stop all AI image generation on the site, in the chat, at the Generate with AI button and in the idea generator. Nothing else has to be removed. Turn it back on when image generation is allowed again.
