Images not generating
Image generation needs three things: the experimental image generation feature of Umbraco.AI (which needs a restart), an image profile, and the switch Generate AI images. See What image generation needs. The sections below start from what you see.
The message says image generation is switched off
You see Image generation is switched off for this site. Turn on 'Generate AI images' under Settings → General if it is allowed again.
Cause
The switch Generate AI images is off. It stops all AI image generation on the site: the chat, the Generate with AI button and the idea generator.
Fix
- Open the Aivie section, and choose General under Configuration.
- Open the tab Brand & style and switch on Generate AI images.
- Press Save.
The message names Settings → General. The screen is in the Aivie section, as described here. See Turning image generation off.
Generating fails and the message mentions the experimental setting
You see Generating failed at size followed by a size and the message of the model, and it ends with Check that the image profile knows this size, and that Umbraco:AI:Experimental:ImageGeneration is switched on.
Cause
One of these:
- The experimental image generation feature of Umbraco.AI is not active yet. The setup wizard switches it on, but it only applies after the site restarts.
- There is no image profile yet. The wizard can only create it once the feature is active, so it is made in a second run of the wizard.
- The profile does not know the requested size.
When the wizard has to skip the profile, its result box says Image generation is switched on in the settings, but only applies after a restart. Restart the site and click Set up Aivie again; the image profile and its default setting are then added.
Fix
- Open Configuration → Setup and press Set up Aivie. Press Restart site and confirm.
- When the site is back, press Set up Aivie a second time. See Apply, restart, apply again.
- Open AI → Profiles and check that an image profile exists (alias
aivie-beeld) and that it is the default image profile. If you use your own profile, its alias is in the setting Profile for image generation. See Image profile. - If the message names a size, check the setting for the size. See Size. Messages such as This model has no landscape size. or Could not determine which sizes this image model supports, and no size is set. ask you to enter a size the model knows, for example
1792x1024.
There is no media folder
You see There is no media folder followed by the name of the folder. The text continues with Create it, or change the setting.
Cause
Aivie saves generated images in one folder of the media library, and does not generate an image when the folder does not exist, because it would otherwise end up in the root of your library. The folder was deleted or renamed, or the setting Media folder names a folder that does not exist.
Fix
Create the folder in the media library with that name, or pick an existing one in the setting Media folder. Running the setup wizard also creates the default folder. See Media folder.
The button reads "No AI allowance left"
The button Generate with AI is replaced by No AI allowance left and looks disabled. When you click it, a warning appears with the date on which the allowance starts again.
Cause
The monthly AI allowance of your subscription is used up.
Fix
See The AI allowance for this month has been used up.
The model returns no image, or the provider reports a problem
You see The model returned no image., or an image request fails and the Image status on the Subscription screen is Problem.
Cause
The AI provider answered without an image, or refused the request. For the second case the cause is the same as for the chat: a key that does not work, a balance or spending limit, rate limiting or a model that no longer exists.
Fix
Try again with a different description. If the status of the image profile shows a problem, follow AI connection problems. The image profile is not tested by Test connection, so its status only changes when an image works.
The box "Generate an image with OpenAI" is not there
Cause
One of these:
- The button belongs to the property editor OpenAI Media Picker. Aivie does not put it on any of your fields by itself.
- Your user group has no access to the Aivie section. The box is only shown to users who have it.
Fix
Add the editor to the image property, as described under Add the picker to a field. Check that your user group has access to the Aivie section, as described in Missing screens.
Ideas are written without images
Cause
The idea generator picks images from the Aivie media folder, and asks for a new image only when an image field stays empty and image generation is on. Ideas get no images when:
- The media folder does not exist. The log has the warning
No media folder namedfollowed by the name, and ideas are written without images. - The folder holds no images, or the images have no description. The generator finds images by their description. See Image descriptions.
- Generate AI images is off, or a generated image failed. The log has
Image generation forfollowed by the field and the idea.
Fix
Fix the folder or the switch as described above. Then press Auto generate, or wait for the next run.
Deriving the image style fails
On the tab Brand & style you press Derive from existing images and get Deriving failed. or one of these messages.
Cause
- The folder 'name' is still empty, so there is nothing to derive. Write the image style by hand, or add a few images first. The Aivie media folder holds no images.
- None of the images in that folder could be read from disk. Are the files still there? The media items exist, but their files are missing from the site.
- Deriving failed: followed by the error, ending in Most likely the default chat profile cannot read images — choose a model there that handles images. The default chat profile uses a model that cannot read images.
Fix
- Folder empty: add images to the Aivie media folder, or write the image style by hand.
- Files missing: put the files of those media items back on the site.
- Model cannot read images: under AI → Profiles, check that the default chat profile uses a model that can read images.
Aivie sends the images as files and not as links, so this works on a local development site too.
The message says you have no permission for the media folder
You press Generate with AI and you see You don't have permission for this media folder. Ask an administrator for access. In the chat, the assistant tells you in its own words that you are not allowed to put an image there.
Cause
Your user has no access, in Umbraco, to the media folder where generated images go: the Aivie media folder, or the folder you chose under Media folder. Either the user group has no access to the Media section, or the start nodes of the user do not cover that folder. No image is made.
Fix
An administrator gives the user group of the person access to the Media section, and gives the user a start node that covers the media folder, under Users. See The assistant follows your Umbraco rights.
