Licence messages

Aivie shows the state of the licence in a banner on every Aivie screen and on the licence screen, in the language of your backoffice. Members of Aivie-admin also see a dialog at login when the licence needs attention: Check your Aivie licence, with the buttons Go to the licence and Later. This page covers the messages people ask about most. The complete list of statuses and messages is on Licence statuses.

The trial period has ended

A dialog titled Your trial period has ended appears once per session. Its text reads Thank you for trying Aivie. You can still look at your pages and settings; creating and changing things works again as soon as there is a licence. You can request one through our request form. Its buttons are Request a licence, I already have a key and Later.

Cause

The trial of 14 days is over. Aivie is read-only from then on. Everything you made stays where it is. The trial also ends sooner for ideas: when the five trial ideas are made, Aivie says Your five trial ideas have been made. With a licence you carry on without this limit, and everything you have already made stays where it is.

Fix

  • No licence yet: press Request a licence. A request form opens in a new tab. When you have a key, enter it as described under Entering a key.
  • You already have a key: press I already have a key and paste it.

A change is refused because Aivie is read-only

You press Save, generate something or ask the chat for a change, and Aivie answers with the licence message instead.

Cause

The licence does not allow Aivie to create or change things. That is the case for the statuses No licence, Expired, Revoked, Different domain and Invalid, and when the licence cannot be read. Looking at your pages, ideas, keywords and settings keeps working. The message names the reason. See Read-only behaviour.

Fix

Read the message on the licence screen, and use the entry below that matches it. Entering a key and Validate always work, also when Aivie is read-only.

This licence applies to other domains

The message reads This licence applies to licensed domains and not to your host name. Ask holder to add this domain. The status is Different domain.

Cause

The key is valid, but the host name you use to open the site is not in the key. Typical cases are a staging or acceptance copy on its own address, or a second host name of the live site, such as the version with and without www.

Fix

Ask the holder of the licence, named in the message, to add the domain to the licence. Or use the site on one of the licensed domains. The licence screen lists the licensed domains and marks the one you are on with CURRENT. When the domain has been added, press Validate on the licence screen so that Aivie asks the licence server for the updated key. If your supplier sends you a new key instead, enter it as described under Entering a key.

Aivie cannot read its licence details

The message starts with Aivie cannot read its licence details at the moment. and says that Aivie will not create or change anything while that lasts. The status is Cannot be read.

Cause

Aivie stores the licence in its own table, aivie_License, in the Umbraco database. The status appears when that table does not answer, for example during a database outage or a timeout. It also appears when the site runs on Umbraco earlier than 17.6.0, where a known Umbraco issue can make the licence unreadable. When only the columns that Aivie added in later versions are missing, for example because the database user may not change tables, Aivie falls back on the columns it needs and the licence stays readable. The log then holds the error Could not update the license table. and, per column, could not be added to.

Fix

  1. Try again after a few minutes. Aivie reads the licence again five minutes after a failed read.
  2. If the site runs on Umbraco earlier than 17.6.0, upgrade Umbraco to 17.6.0 or later. See the requirements.
  3. If it persists, check that the database is up and that the table aivie_License exists. In the log, look for Could not read the license data.
  4. If the log reports columns that could not be added, give the database user of the site the right to change tables (ALTER TABLE) once, and restart the site.
  5. You can always enter the key again on the licence screen, and press Validate. Both stay open while Aivie cannot read the licence.

The licence has not been renewed

The message reads The licence has not been renewed and expires on date. Contact holder. and later The licence has not been renewed. Contact holder. or The licence expired on date. The status is Not renewed and later Expired.

Cause

A licence key is a lease of 35 days that Aivie replaces by itself every 24 hours. On a site where that does not happen, the key runs out after 35 days, even when the licence is paid. Aivie does not renew in two cases that are easy to miss:

  • Aivie:BaseUrl points to the machine itself, such as localhost, on a live site. Aivie then treats the site as a local installation. The setup wizard writes this key from the field Public URL.
  • The ASP.NET environment of the site is Development.

When that is the case, the log says The license renewal does not run: at every start, followed by the reason. The reason is written in Dutch at the moment.

If the licence server reports that the licence was not paid, the message comes from the server and the cause is on the side of the licence holder.

Fix

  1. Open Configuration → Setup and fill in Public URL with the real public address of the site, for example https://www.example.com. Press Set up Aivie. See Required fields.
  2. Make sure the site does not run in the Development environment.
  3. Restart the site. Aivie decides at start whether it renews.
  4. Open the licence screen and press Validate. The message The licence has been revalidated. confirms it.

If the licence has already expired, and the problem is not on your side, ask your supplier. See Lease and renewal.

The licence key is not valid

The message reads The licence key is not valid. Check that it was copied completely, or ask your supplier for a new one. When you try to save a key, the screen answers This licence key is not valid. Check that it was copied completely. A key for another product gives This key was issued for product and not for product.

Cause

The key is incomplete, has been changed while copying, or belongs to another product.

Fix

Copy the key again from the mail you received, in one piece. It starts with AIVIE-. If it keeps failing, ask your supplier for a new one.
